When
it comes to choosing the right light bulbs for your facility, making the right
decision comes down to what you and your company values the most—for example:
Do you care more about saving money immediately or over time? And how big of a
part does the environmental impact of your choice play into your decision?
There
is a lot to consider before purchasing new light fixtures. Sometimes the
decision is easy to make, like when one option is superior to the rest in every
way or when there is a better light option for every drawback one particular
light option has. In this article we’re going to discuss the disadvantages of
MR16s and why LED is the best light option every time.
MR16s
are perfect for directional light applications and MR16s deliver bright light
that is nearly identical to natural sunlight; however, there are other light
options that can do everything MR16s can do without the drawbacks.
1.
MR16s Get Really Hot
One
drawback of MR16 halogen light bulbs is they get really hot. Inside each MR16
lamp, there is a filament capsule that can get as hot as 500-degrees
Fahrenheit. This can be dangerous if the capsule comes into contact with a
person’s skin or flammable materials. Touching a hot MR16 bulb can result in
severe burns. Furthermore, MR16 light bulbs give off a lot of heat and it can
be uncomfortable to stand or sit near halogen light bulbs for an extended
period of time. The extra heat can also affect room temperatures and air
conditioning costs.
2.
You Can Never Touch MR16
Light Bulbs
You
might think that you can touch an MR16 light bulb if it’s turned off, but you
can’t. The oils on your fingers will remain on the MR16 bulb and heat up once
the bulb is turn on. Then, the oil will cause an imbalance and result in a
rupture of the bulb. This shortens the lifespan of the bulb.
3.
MR16s Don’t Last a Long Time
The
average lifespan of an MR16 light bulb is 2,000 hours. If an MR16 light bulb is
left on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, then it would last for approximately 6
months before it would need replacing. Changing light bulbs every 6 months is
expensive and time-consuming.
4.
MR16s Aren’t The Safest
Option
With
MR16 light bulbs, there is always a safety risk. Whether the risk is getting
severely burned from touching a hot light bulb or the light bulb exploding –
it’s difficult to endure the continuous risk of danger. We cannot overlook the
advantages of MR16 light bulbs, such as: directional lighting, low costs, zero
mercury, and instant on. But, LEDs have all of these features without the
drawbacks that MR16s have.
Replace MR16 Halogen Light
Bulbs With MR16 LED Light Bulbs
MR16
LED light bulbs consume 50% less power than MR16 Halogen bulbs and can function
up to 100,000 hours. Compared to the 2,000 to 6,000 hour lifetime of a MR16
Halogen bulb, the installation of MR16 LED light bulbs eliminate the need for
constant bulb replacement and require less maintenance over time.
