Tools Needed for Measuring Your Plastic Light Globes

To make sure you are getting a consistent and accurate measurement of your plastic lighting globes, you need the following tools.

  1. The existing globe you intend to replace with a new one. Measurement should still be possible if the globe is merely cracked, but if it is totally destroyed, you will need to grab a similar model.
  2. The lighting fixture it will be mounted on. There are different lighting capacity and attachment styles you should be aware of before buying a replacement fixture.
  3. A tape measure.

Superior Lighting offers numerous lighting globe fixtures in all styles. It is crucial for you to determine which type you need before ordering a replacement. We can help you figure out what type is best for the fixture you happen to own.

Here are a few examples of the different attachment models there are out there for lighting fixtures. You globe’s openings may be in one of the following styles…

  • Neckless

In neckless fixtures, the opening of the globe does not protrude from the globes itself the way it does on a jar. Instead, the opening is flat against the contour of the globe.

  • Plain lip

Unlike the neckless, the opening of plain lip lighting globes does protrude from the shape of the fixture. This gives the impression of a jar or vase-like appearance when the opening is facing upward. The lip does not have any spiraling screw threads, but is plain, as the name suggests.

  • Threaded lip

The threaded lip opening style has a protruding edge just like the plain lip but is threaded to accommodate a screw style fixture.

How to Measure the Lighting Globe

There are two key dimensions you need to know when you are measuring your plastic lighting globes. The first you can obtain by taking your plastic globe, and placing the tip of the tape measure on one edge of the mouth of the globe, and laying it flat across the top in a straight line. Write down the length of the two furthest points on the opening.

To get the second dimension, all you need to do is point the mouth of the globe upwards. It helps if you have a steady and secure surface to do this, like a tabletop. Place the tape measure so that the tip is going straight down into the middle of the globe. Straighten it when the tip hits the wall of the globe.
